This Beautiful Place Called Refuge

A few weeks ago one of my Refuge team leaders asked me if there was a specific reason why I name our ministry Refuge.  There wasn’t a specific reason, however if you do a word study on the word refuge the Bible paints a beautiful place where God allows us to come into.  In Numbers 35 God tells Moses to create cities of Refuge when he leads the people of Israel into the land of Canaan.  These cities were set up for protection in case someone accidentally killed someone without intent, so they can be protected until they where able to stand trail.  God’s Refuge is a place we can go to for His protection.  This place of protection is a “strong fortress.” Psalm 31 “…Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me!”  God’s refuge is not going to break. Who can come into this place called refuge? Anyone.  It is for those who are oppressed. Psalm 9:9, “The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.” Psalm 9 also brings us to our next point as well as Psalm 59:16 that we can enter into God’s refuge during times of trouble.  Psalm 59:16, “…for you are my fortress my refuge in times of trouble.”  God’s refuge is for the poor. Isaiah 25:4, “You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat.” We will not be condemned for entering into God’s refuge. Psalm 34:22, “The Lord will rescue his servants; no one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.”  It is a blessing to be able to take refuge in the Lord. Psalm 2: 12,”…Blessed are all who take refuge in him,” and Psalm 34: 8 “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” Who is are refuge? God and God alone. Deuteronomy 33:27, “The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms…” God is our Refuge, He is our resting place, He will not condemned, He is our protection, it is for our good that we go to Him. When we first start people out in our discipleship training  this is the very first thing we look at.  We look at this incredible place we can run to. God’s Refuge!

I Would Do It All Again – My Past!

My past.  Was full of hurt, pain, shame, guilt, depression, thoughts of suicide and a addiction to pornography.  Pornography became my drug to be able to escape the pain that was in my life.  I spent several, several years trying to clean up a past that I was ashamed of.  A past that I thought had to be in place to be able to be used by the Lord.  A past that I was tired of carrying around with me.  The Lord has now brought me to a place in my life that I am no longer ashamed of my past. He is using my past, my failures, my sins, to bring His name glory.  I am so thankful that I have a God who loves me so much that He takes my brokenness and uses it to help others and to advance His kingdom.  It has taking me a while to get to this place and yesterday the Lord showed me again of His redemptive work in my life.  I was talking yesterday with a parent and was sharing my story with her, and mentioned if I had to live through my past again I would do so because I have come to a very special place with my walk with the Lord. A place I don’t know if I would have ever come to if I didn’t walk through what the Lord has allowed me to go through.  During my conversation I didn’t think anything about this statement until later that night.  The Lord brought this part of the conversation up to show me how far He has brought me and to remind me that I am no longer trying to fix a past I could never fix.  He has redeemed my entire life, past, present, and future.  I say that to say, remember that the Lord can take your past, no matter how broken it is, no matter how much pain there is, and bring you to a place of peace. God can use your past to bring Him glory and to help others.  The healing process is not a easy journey to be on, its often painful, but God uses pain to bring about healing.  The greatest example of this is the cross.  I am still on this journey of healing, and I can say that it does get easier with time.  Continue to press on in your journey of healing.  Continue to know God is going to us your past to bring Him glory.  To God Be The Glory. Isaiah 61: 1-11 (This is Jesus’ mission statement – This is why He came)

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
    because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;[a]
    he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
    and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;[b]
to proclaim the year of the Lord‘s favor,
    and the day of vengeance of our God;
    to comfort all who mourn;
to grant to those who mourn in Zion—
    to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
    the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
    the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.[c]
They shall build up the ancient ruins;
    they shall raise up the former devastations;
they shall repair the ruined cities,
    the devastations of many generations.

Strangers shall stand and tend your flocks;
    foreigners shall be your plowmen and vinedressers;
but you shall be called the priests of the Lord;
    they shall speak of you as the ministers of our God;
you shall eat the wealth of the nations,
    and in their glory you shall boast.
Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion;
    instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot;
therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion;
    they shall have everlasting joy.

For I the Lord love justice;
    I hate robbery and wrong;[d]
I will faithfully give them their recompense,
    and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
Their offspring shall be known among the nations,
    and their descendants in the midst of the peoples;
all who see them shall acknowledge them,
    that they are an offspring the Lord has blessed.

10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord;
    my soul shall exult in my God,
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;
    he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress,
    and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the earth brings forth its sprouts,
    and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up,
so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise
    to sprout up before all the nations.

What part of the addiction are you still feeding?
